Using WalletConnect and Safe Multisig on Polygon

WalletConnect is not a wallet. It is a protocol that lets mobile wallets communicate with desktop browser interfaces. You scan a QR code with your phone; that code contains a session request. Once scanned, your mobile wallet and the desktop dApp share an encrypted connection. No private keys leave your phone. The connection is temporary and session-based.

Many Polygon dApps support WalletConnect. Uniswap, QuickSwap, Aave, and others display a WalletConnect button alongside MetaMask. You click it, a QR code appears, then you open your mobile wallet - MetaMask Mobile, Trust Wallet, or Rainbow - and scan the code. Confirm the connection, and that is the entire setup.

Session management and disconnection

A WalletConnect session persists until you explicitly end it. Close the browser tab? The session lives on. Your wallet may still show an active connection. You can, however, revoke sessions from within your mobile wallet: look for a "Connected Sites" or "Sessions" section, tap the active session, and choose disconnect.

Some users forget this step. They leave sessions open on public computers, which is not ideal. Anyone with access to that browser could potentially reconnect if the session data remains. Always disconnect manually. Treat each session like a logged-in account.

Introducing safe on polygon

Safe was formerly known as Gnosis Safe. It is a smart contract wallet. Unlike a regular wallet, it requires multiple signatures to execute a transaction - you define the owners and the threshold. A 2-of-3 Safe, for instance, requires two of three owners to approve any outgoing transfer.

Safe runs on Polygon. The deployment is live and functional. You deploy a Safe from the Safe web app: connect your wallet, choose Polygon as the network, define owners (these are wallet addresses), set the threshold, and confirm the deployment transaction. The Safe is now a contract on Polygon with its own address.

When everyday users might want multisig

Multisig is not only for DAOs and protocols. It has practical uses for everyday Polygon users.

Shared funds are one reason. Think of two people managing a shared expense account - rent, bills, group purchases. A 2-of-2 Safe means neither can spend without the other agreeing. That prevents unilateral decisions.

DAO participation is another. Many Polygon DAOs require a multisig for voting or treasury management. If you hold a role in a DAO, you may need to co-sign transactions, and a Safe makes that process transparent.

Extra security is a third reason. A single wallet is vulnerable to a single seed phrase leak. A 2-of-3 Safe means an attacker would need two keys; even if one key is compromised, funds remain safe. Some users keep one key on a hardware wallet, one on their phone, and one with a trusted person.

How to Set Up Safe on Polygon

Go to app.safe.global. Connect your wallet. Select Polygon from the network dropdown. Click "Create new Safe" - this name is local to your browser. Add owner addresses; each owner must be an existing wallet. Set the threshold. Review the estimated gas fee. Confirm the deployment.

Deployment costs MATIC, the gas token on Polygon. If you have insufficient MATIC, the transaction will fail. Fund the deploying wallet first.

After deployment, your Safe has an address. You can send MATIC, USDC, or any Polygon token to that address. To send out, you initiate a transaction, and other owners receive a notification. They approve from their own wallets. Once the threshold is met, the transaction executes.

Limitations

Safe on Polygon uses the same contracts as Ethereum, which is good for reliability. But gas fees still apply per transaction, and multisig transactions cost more than single-signature ones because each approval is an on-chain transaction.

There is no way to recover a Safe if all owner keys are lost. The contract has no backdoor - that is by design. It also means you must guard every owner key carefully.

WalletConnect and Safe are separate tools that can work together. You can connect a mobile wallet to the Safe web app via WalletConnect, letting you approve Safe transactions from your phone. The same QR pairing process applies. Use both, or use neither. That depends on your needs.
