Understanding Nonce Errors on Polygon and How to Clear Them
A nonce error on Polygon means the transaction you're trying to send has an incorrect sequence number, typically because your wallet's local record of sent transactions is out of sync with the Polygon network. Clearing it usually involves resetting your wallet activity or advancing the nonce manually.
What a Nonce Is and Why It Matters
Every transaction you send from a Polygon address must include a nonce - a sequential counter starting at zero for the first transaction. The network rejects transactions that use a nonce already used (duplicate) or skip ahead too far (gap). Your wallet tracks this number locally, but if you send a transaction from another wallet, cancel a pending one, or switch between multiple wallet interfaces, the local count can fall out of sync. The result: a "nonce too low" or "nonce error" message.
Common causes on polygon
- Multiple wallets sharing one address. Using MetaMask, WalletConnect, and a phone wallet for the same account can create conflicting nonce records.
- Stuck pending transactions. If a transaction is stuck (common during gas spikes) and you cancel or replace it, the next transaction's nonce may be wrong.
- Imported or recovered wallet. Restoring a seed phrase on a new device often resets the local nonce to zero, while the network remembers transactions already sent.
- Manual nonce adjustment gone wrong. Some tools let you set nonce manually; a misstep can break the sequence.
- Using a hardware wallet with different software. Ledger Live and MetaMask may track nonces differently for the same address.
How to check your current nonce
Before clearing an error, confirm the actual nonce your address expects. Use PolygonScan:
- Go to
polygonscan.comand enter your wallet address. - Under the "Transactions" tab, look at the latest outgoing transaction. The nonce is listed in the "Nonce" column (usually the last column).
- The next valid nonce is that number plus one. For example, if the last confirmed transaction has nonce 14, the next must be 15.
Your wallet likely shows a different number. That mismatch is the problem.
Methods to Clear a Nonce Error
Method 1: Reset Your Wallet's Account Activity (Simple)
This forces the wallet to resync the nonce from the network. Works for MetaMask and most EVM wallets.
In MetaMask: 1. Open MetaMask and click the account icon (top right). 2. Go to Settings > Advanced > Clear activity tab data. 3. Confirm. This removes local transaction history and refreshes the nonce. 4. Wait a few seconds, then try sending a transaction again.
This does not delete your funds or seed phrase. It only clears the wallet's local record of sent transactions. After reset, MetaMask will fetch the correct nonce from PolygonScan.
In other wallets: Look for a "reset account" or "clear nonce" option. On mobile wallets, reinstalling the app with the same seed phrase can also work, but only as a last resort.
Method 2: Send a Transaction with a Manual Nonce (Advanced)
If resetting doesn't work, you can force a transaction with the correct nonce. This is useful when you have a stuck pending transaction that won't clear.
- In MetaMask, enable custom nonce: Settings > Advanced > Show nonce control > turn on.
- Compose a simple MATIC transfer to yourself (send a tiny amount to your own address) or to a burn address. Use low gas settings - speed doesn't matter here.
- Before confirming, click the "Nonce" field and enter the next valid nonce from PolygonScan (e.g., 15).
- Confirm and send. This transaction fills the gap, and subsequent transactions will use the next nonce automatically.
If the network rejects a nonce that is already used, you must skip to the next unused one. Check the "Latest 25 Outgoing" on PolygonScan to see which nonces are pending or confirmed.
Method 3: Use a Third-Party Nonce Reset Tool (Caution)
Some services let you batch-clear stuck nonces by sending zero-value transactions. Only use a well-known tool like noncereset.io or a custom script from a reputable developer. Verify the tool's address and contract on PolygonScan before approving any interaction. Never share your private key.
Preventing future nonce errors
- Use one wallet interface per address. Stick to MetaMask or your phone wallet, not both, unless you manually sync.
- Don't cancel or replace transactions unless necessary. Each replacement changes the nonce sequence and can confuse wallets.
- Avoid manual nonce editing unless you know the exact current value.
- After restoring a seed phrase on a new device, always check PolygonScan first and send a small test transaction to re-establish the nonce.
When to seek help
If you've tried clearing activity and sending a manual nonce transaction but still get errors, the issue may be a stuck transaction that the network won't replace. Check the "Pending" section on PolygonScan for that address. If a transaction has been pending for days, you may need to wait for it to drop (Polygon nodes eventually discard very old pending transactions) or use a custom RPC endpoint with higher gas to replace it. For persistent problems, consult a Polygon support channel or a developer familiar with EVM nonce mechanics.
