Why is my polygon transaction stuck pending and how do I fix it?
A pending transaction on Polygon usually means the network accepted your transaction but validators haven't confirmed it yet. This happens when the gas price you set is too low for current network conditions, or when your wallet has a stuck nonce from an earlier unconfirmed transaction. The fix is either to wait, speed up the transaction, or cancel and resend it.
What "Pending" Actually Means on Polygon
When you submit a transaction, it enters the mempool - a holding area for unconfirmed transactions. Validators pick transactions from the mempool based on gas price. Higher gas price means higher priority. If you set a gas price below the network average, your transaction sits until the network clears or until you take action.
Polygon's block time is roughly 2 seconds, so most transactions confirm in a few seconds under normal conditions. If yours is stuck for minutes or hours, something is wrong.
Common Causes
Gas price too low
The most frequent reason. Polygon gas prices fluctuate with demand. If you set a gas price during a quiet period and the network becomes busy, your transaction may not be attractive enough for validators.
Stuck Nonce
Every wallet address has a nonce - a sequential number that counts your transactions. If transaction nonce 5 is pending, nonce 6 cannot confirm until nonce 5 does. Even if you set a high gas price for nonce 6, it will wait for the earlier stuck transaction.
RPC Node Issues
Your wallet connects to a Polygon RPC node. If that node is slow, overloaded, or out of sync, your transaction may appear stuck locally even after the network has confirmed it. This is less common but worth checking.
Insufficient MATIC for gas
You need MATIC to pay gas. If your balance drops below the required amount after submitting - for example, from a simultaneous swap - the transaction cannot proceed. This is rare but possible.
How to check what's happening
- Copy your transaction hash from the wallet (MetaMask shows it in Activity).
- Paste it into PolygonScan.
- Look at the status. If it shows "Pending" with a spinning icon, the network sees it. If it shows nothing or "Not Found", the transaction may not have reached the mempool - your RPC node may be the problem.
If the transaction is not on PolygonScan at all, switch your RPC endpoint in the wallet to a different provider and resubmit. See the Polygon RPC Error Fixes article on this site for endpoint options.
How to Fix a Stuck Transaction
You have three options. Try them in this order.
Option 1: Wait
If the network is congested but your gas price is close to average, the transaction may confirm within minutes. Check PolygonScan's gas tracker for current average gas prices. If your gas price is within 10-20% of average, waiting is reasonable. If it is far below, move to Option 2.
Option 2: Speed Up (Replace with Higher Gas)
Most wallets let you resubmit the same transaction with a higher gas price. This replaces the original in the mempool.
In MetaMask: 1. Go to Activity and find the stuck transaction. 2. Click it and select Speed Up. 3. MetaMask suggests a higher gas price. You can adjust it manually. A 20-50% increase is usually enough. 4. Confirm.
The new transaction uses the same nonce as the old one. Validators see the higher gas price and drop the lower one. If the speed-up confirms, the original disappears.
Option 3: Cancel the Transaction
If you no longer want the transaction to go through, you can cancel it by sending a zero-value transaction to yourself with a higher gas price and the same nonce.
In MetaMask: 1. Go to Settings > Advanced > Clear activity and nonce data (this resets the local display, not the network). 2. Open the stuck transaction in Activity and click Cancel. 3. MetaMask sends a zero-value replacement with higher gas. 4. Confirm.
If cancellation works, the original transaction fails and the nonce is freed.
If neither speed up nor cancel works through the wallet interface, you can do it manually using a block explorer's "Send" feature with custom nonce settings. This is more technical - search for "custom nonce transaction Polygon" on this site for detailed steps.
How to prevent stuck transactions
- Check Polygon gas prices before submitting. Use PolygonScan's gas tracker or a browser extension. Set gas price at or above the current average.
- Do not send multiple transactions in rapid succession. Wait for each to confirm before sending the next.
- If you must send many transactions, keep track of nonces manually. Some wallets let you set a custom nonce.
- Use a reliable RPC endpoint. Free public endpoints can be slow. Consider a service like Infura or Alchemy for better reliability.
- Keep at least 0.1 MATIC in your wallet for gas at all times.
When to Give Up and Contact Support
If you have tried speed up and cancel, the transaction is still pending after 24 hours, and PolygonScan shows no progress, the issue may be with your wallet or a very deep mempool backlog. In rare cases, a transaction can remain pending indefinitely if the network never clears the gas price tier.
You can try resetting your wallet's nonce data in MetaMask (Settings > Advanced > Clear activity tab data) and then sending a new transaction with a fresh nonce. This does not cancel the old one but lets you move forward. The old transaction will eventually fail when the network drops it.
For wallet-specific issues, contact the wallet provider's support. For RPC issues, switch endpoints. For anything else, the Polygon community forums or Discord may have current information.
